Connect Story:
One Day in Africa

Hiroki Ishida

Manager, Asia Africa Investment and Consulting Pte. Ltd.
(Full-time Class of 2012)

The image some people have of Africa as a continent where it is hot and there is poverty and fighting, is not necessarily incorrect. However, my experience in Nairobi, Kenya, has been different.

Nairobi lies at an altitude of approximately 1,700 meters and the weather is pleasantly cool throughout the year. A lot of construction is underway, most of them done by mainland Chinese companies. Keiko, my wife, is fortunately enjoying our life in Kenya.

My company manages a fund called “Toyota Tsusho Creating Shared Value (CSV) Africa”. Although there are many financial players in Kenya and other African countries already, this is Japan’s first venture development fund in Africa.

I am in charge of sourcing, due diligence, valuation and monitoring on the ground. So far the fund has invested in a large-scale agricultural business in Zambia and a leather-good sewing business in Ethiopia.

EMP Kick-off Gathering

Relationships are developed, nurtured and treasured and they all begin at some point. Our Elite Mentorship Program Kick-off Dinner was an inspiring success, with the mentors and mentees meeting each other for the first time under a cheerful and relaxing atmosphere.

The event was held at Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Tsim Sha Tsui on September 24. This year we are very excited and fortunate to have 44 mentors including 9 new mentors, to coach and guide the mentees along the path in their CUHK MBA journey. May our mentors and mentees sow the seeds for many future success stories from here on out!

MBA Recruitment Talks

MBA Career Management Center has organized a series of on-campus recruitment talks with some of the world’s renowned employers such as Citigroup, Fung Group, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft and Shell in Term 1. Advice and tips were shared by senior executives from these companies and the students were enthusiastic to connect with these professionals. The recruiters shared very useful information on leadership development programs, summer internship and MBA-focused opportunities. These events not only provide information but also excellent opportunities for the students to put themselves in front of these business leaders and connect to them in person.

Student Clubs Promotion Day cum Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration

On September 26, most of the FT and PT students gathered to support their fellow classmates on the Student Clubs Promotion Day. We were happy to learn that there are 10 student clubs this year. Each of the club set up the booths and presented their clubs plan to the class. Each club received overwhelming support from their classmates.  They all enjoyed the small games and light refreshment. In celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival, everyone felt warmth and joy with the mooncakes and lanterns provided by the MBA office.

Alumni Story -  Rosetta Fong (MBA 2002)
This month’s ‘Alumni Story’ features Rosetta Fong (MBA 2002). The Macau-born alumna had a big year in 2015. Not only did she become group vice chairman at Convoy Financial Holdings Limited, she also ran the 250-kilometre ‘Hell’s Marathon’ in the Sahara Desert. What is surprising about this financial woman of steel is that she initially knew little about the finance sector and disliked exercise as a child. Foresight, strength of will and a fun-loving nature are what push her to challenge herself at every turn. They also drive the innovative corporate culture under the leadership of Rosetta and top management executives.
