Business Field Trip to Beijing: CUHK MBA students discover the massive flux of innovative industries in China

A good combination of over 40 full-time and part-time MBA students embarked on a 5-day field trip to Beijing in mid-June. Through company visits, interacting with industry leaders, and attending seminars by company executives and faculty members of local institutions, students gained a deeper understanding of the latest development of innovative industries, technology start-ups and platform businesses in Mainland China.

Highlights of the company visits and seminars

Kuaishou Technology

Visit to one of the world’s leading short video platforms and China’s largest life-sharing platform where students learned about the applications of AI in screening and recommending videos.

 

IBM Research Centre Beijing

The Centre has been leading in the development of core AI capabilities, industry solutions and other advanced technologies such as cloud, Internet-of-Things (IoT) and blockchain.  MBA students had the opportunity to understand the research and technology development of a well-established multinational company in China.

 

Renmin University of China

Two lectures were delivered by faculty members from this comprehensive research university, followed by a campus tour and a networking dinner with Renmin MBA and International MBA students.

 

Meituan Dianping

Visit to one of the world’s largest online and on-demand delivery platforms where students were exposed to a business model that has a heavy focus on technology investment as well as understanding its operational challenges.

 

Waterdrop (Shuidichou)

A Beijing-based healthcare crowdfunding platform consists of an online medical community and a medical insurance platform. The visit allowed students to comprehend development plans and startup cultures in China.

 

ArkDB is a tech start-up focusing on database product. Mr Zhou Yanwei, CEO & Founder of the company shared his experience and insights on how to set up, develop and manage a tech startup.

 

JD.com

A leading B2C e-retailer in China. Students got good insights into the recent e-retailing scene in China by understanding its investment pattern and technological achievements.

 

Lenovo

Lenovo offers cloud computing, virtualisation, big data, application solution, hyperfusion, data centre service, and storage business continuity.  Students gained perspectives into comparing the culture, technology, business development and management style of this well-established company with the other new internet businesses throughout the trip.
