Connect Story
Frank de Gioia (Full-time, Class of 2013)
Marketing Director – EEMEA,
Stryker
Having worked for five years after graduation, Frank de Gioia decided to study for an MBA and reshape his career, leaving behind his current job in finance in the field of infrastructure development, about which he was not particularly passionate. But, apart from changing the industry and job function, he also wanted to expand his horizon and learn more about other parts of the world.
He set specific objectives for himself. He felt passionate about healthcare, which saves lives and extends life spans, and wanted to work in a medical device company. He planned to move from California to the Asian emerging markets and change from finance to the commercial side of the business......

Call for Mentorship

In today’s business environment of multiple challenges, rapid developments and disruptions, managing careers has become increasingly complex. CUHK Business School understands that a powerful way to successfully develop careers is through mentoring. Mentors can provide mentees with informal guidance on important career transitions by sharing knowledge and experiences.
The Mentorship Program is a safe yet informal partnership between CUHK MBA alumni and students. Both parties can foster a learning and sharing environment and become part of a wider support network. Mentors and mentees will engage in building trustful relationships, in which mentees will move towards continuous self-development through personal and professional guidance provided by mentors. Equally, mentors will have an opportunity to develop and strengthen their own coaching, mentoring and leadership skills.

WHAT’S NEW
This year the Mentor/Mentee matching is facilitated by a sophisticated, yet easy to use online platform whereby the MBA alumni and current MBA students will enter a description of their profile, career paths and aspirations, sectors and functions. The system will then automatically select the best matching combination of mentor and mentee.

Testimonials from Mentors
  • Clement Lau (Graduated in 1996)
“As a mentor, the Mentorship Program has offered me a great opportunity to meet with the young and bright minds of the University, who have a very different background from mine. Through the gatherings and discussions, my mentees and I shared and supplemented each other on our different and sometimes conflicting views on global, business, professional and personal issues. We have now become friends, and look forward to extending our friendship beyond the program!”

  • Sagar Saraf (Graduated in 2011)
"Whilst mentorship requires time investment and commitment, the program has been rewarding for me at multiple levels. It provided me with an opportunity for self-reflection, also further expanding my network whilst providing direction, finding answers and creating visibility for my mentees. I believe that with the right attitude and approach plus an open mind to share experiences, knowledge and to learn something new, mentorship does bring a sense of fulfilment.”

CUHK MBA June Field Trips

It was a busy week in June where our MBA students embarked on their field trips. They were divided into 4 groups, each group going to a different country but all went with the same mission: That’s to gain a better understanding of the business practices, entrepreneurship and start-ups in the country they visited.

PUMA Company Visit

A group of MBA students visited the PUMA office in May. Through the sharing sessions from the company’s senior executives, our students got invaluable insights as to how and why this 70-year-old brand stays ahead in such an openly competitive market. The new open-space office was also worth to mention.

Recruiters' Day

On May 31, the Career Management Centre organised its first Recruiters’ Day. We wanted to express our gratitude to these recruiters who have been working with us continuously (on jobs and internships, on campus or on site presentations etc.) and have been on and on extremely supportive to the CUHK Business School Community.
The event kick-started by a welcome-coffee, followed by a presentation from Ms. Elsie Tsui, Lecturer and Consultant, on Design Thinking. It ended on a high note with a sumptuous lunch and a speech delivered by our Dean, Professor Kalok Chan.
A great turnout of 65 representatives from 40 plus companies. It is not only a great way to engage but also to reconnect and to network!

Big Turnout for MBA Happy Hour

On May 29, an MBA Happy Hour took place at Liberty Exchange Kitchen & Bar, a popular hangout in Central. Over 120 MBA alumni, students and faculty members spent an enjoyable evening making new contacts and catching up with old friends. Many of the attendees were mentors and mentees, and the cheerful gathering just came in the right time to mark the close of a fruitful academic year.
The venue was the scene of much fun and laughter. In this cosy, casual setting, alumni and graduands from various backgrounds chatted and mingled. They enjoyed delicious sharing plates alongside their drinks, and commemorated the special occasion by taking selfies.
