Business Modelling

Suggested for students who are interested in a career in consulting, finance or where quantitative analysis is required, the course focuses on business modelling using Excel. It offers help in using Excel more effectively and covers conditional and custom formatting, data validation, Excel’s Data Tables as a way of handling uncertainty and Pivot Tables for processing large amounts of data. Students resolve some interesting business problems.

The 19-hour project-based course covers disruptions and new territories created by the digitalization of industries, markets, and companies. Students discuss several case studies and learn how to understand, design, and implement a game–changing digital business model or analyze and rebuild an old one. It is presumed that students are familiar with some of the fundamental concepts of strategy, competitive analysis, finance and general marketing discussed in other courses.

The advances of information technology have given business strategies a new dimension: building computer-mediated networks to facilitate transactions over e-platforms. Examples include Amazon, Google, Alibaba, Uber, Airbnb and other B2B, B2C and C2C platforms. The e-platform business has network effect following demand-side scale economies that see the value of a product in the willingness-to-pay of customers. This course discusses new perspectives of business strategies on pricing, platform products, envelopment attacks, winner-takes-all effect and cannibalization.

This elective introduces the concept of sustainable business or ‘business for good’, explaining what it is and why it is an essential skill for all business leaders of the future. Student teams work on real-life business ideas, which they will present to social impact investors and sustainable business practitioners.

Data Visualization and Business Intelligence

In this course, students will learn how to produce their own business analysis with minimal help from central IT, to gain business intelligence and communicate the results to key decision makers. The course introduces the use of Excel BI toolkit with its four add-ins, namely, Power Query, PowerPivot, Power View, and Power Map. Students with at least intermediate and preferably advanced level of Excel skills will benefit from this course.
