Three Internship Opportunities To Truly Experience PEVC and Consulting

CUHK MBA - Sonny Lang - 1

Why did you choose CUHK for an MBA?

Hong Kong is a vibrant cosmopolitan city, which is also an important financial part of the Greater Bay Area. Shanghai and Beijing are also international cities, but working in Hong Kong, especially in finance or investment, offers more exposure to diversified and multinational projects. Therefore, Hong Kong becomes the city where I want to develop my career in, as I have years of experience in investment. To achieve career transformation, I decided to study for an MBA in Hong Kong.

PEVC is one of my career development direction. As entrepreneurship is one of the significant advantages of the CUHK MBA, I was sure that I could meet people aiming to be an entrepreneur. Their experience and understanding of entrepreneurship and the start-up industry would definitely inspire me. That was the main reason why I chose CUHK. I could understand more about the latest practical cases of start-ups both in China through classmates, professors as well as alumni. Joining online and offline events and forums also broadened my horizons and enhanced my independent thinking.

Why did you choose these three enterprises for your internship?

Besides PEVC, consulting is another industry that I think has a promising future.  I want to explore these two industries to find out which one would be my perfect match.

Having hands-on internship experience is the best way. With reference to the resume guidance provided and workshops held by our Career Management Centre, I was well prepared for interviews. Luckily, I received internship opportunities in three companies, Yonghua Capital, Capgemini Invent and TransUnion, achieving the goal of gaining personal experience at PEVC and consulting companies.

Thanks to CUHK and also my fellows, I received an internship opportunity at TransUnion. Collaborating with CUHK Career Management Centre, TransUnion held a virtual career fair. I missed the opportunity to join the fair but fortunately one of my classmates informed me there was a position that was the best match for me. Therefore, I could seize the opportunity to apply for that internship position. Later, I found that the TransUnion internship was tailormade for the CUHK master programmes. I do appreciate the great effort the Career Management Centre has made for our students.

I focused on private equity in Yonghua while I received hands-on experience of the whole consulting process, from understanding the needs of our customers, interview design, industry analysis to strategy planning. Later, the experience I gained from the previous two companies in PEVC and consulting was fully utilised in TransUnion. I provided market entry analysis, business opportunity identification and strategic design for the TransUnion for developing business in the Greater Bay Area. During my time at TransUnion, I directly reported to the CEO and head of department of TransUnion HK and India. This was a great opportunity for me to improve my skills and experience.

Did you come across any difficulties during your internship? How did you conquer them?

Actually, it was a great challenge for me to balance my studies and internship. There were too many projects I needed to handle at the same time. Prioritising duties was crucial. During the MBA study journey, staying focused and independent thinking mindset I nurtured helped a lot. By identifying my own objectives, I could eliminate distractions for a better arrangement of my job duties.

Furthermore, when collaborating with colleagues and supervisors, the communication skills I learnt during my MBA greatly improved my job efficiency. All of my MBA classmates are in the elite of different industries. I partnered with different classmates to work on group projects in class. During the collaboration, each of us had a unique point of view. It was a great challenge to identify every student’s strength and reach a consensus in order to achieve goals more effectively. However, the study journey helped me to nurture the ability of altering the communication method according to different work and social situations in order to achieve my goals efficiently.

After the internship, what are your future plans?

By having hands-on experience in PEVC and consulting, I was able to apply the theories I learnt and the mindset I nurtured into practice. At the same time, I could also have a solid understanding of how well these industries fit with my expectations and capabilities. I will focus on my studies first. I will then pay attention to the development of these industries in order to find the right job for myself. I believe that the mindset I nurtured from my MBA journey would definitely point me in the right direction for the future.
