December 2017
CUHK MBA
Dear colleagues and friends,
Now that we are all ready to take a rest and begin a new year at CUHK, I’d like to share with you an overview of our many accomplishments as well as our objectives for the year ahead.
Career Development Center
As part of the MBA curriculum review and the launch of our Master in Management (MiM) Program, we learned that employers are very appreciative of our MBA talents and that recruiters recognise the value of our students’ knowledge and diverse backgrounds. The review also highlighted the importance of investing in our Career Development Center, as you will see below to know more.
We also welcomed Marie Courtois, former Head of Careers for Working Professional at INSEAD, to the expanded role of Head of Career Management for Graduate Programs in order to strengthen the management of the team.
Mentorship Program
Before the summer, we also revamped and relaunched our Mentorship Program with great success. Now opened to Part-time students, over 60 mentors and 90 students are participating this year.
New Courses and Field Trips
I had the great pleasure to lead the first ever CUHK field trip to Africa earlier this month. With 24 students, we helped the NGO Village Water deliver fresh and clean water to remote villages in the Western province of Zambia. Click here to watch the video!
Going Forward
Of course, none of the last year’s achievements could have been possible without the constant dedication of our professional teachers and staff. With so many achievements to be proud of, we now have a very exciting year ahead of us! There are several ongoing projects relating to digital technologies in education, and new programs as well as the implementation of ideas from our students, etc.
I wish everyone a productive and successful year. All the best for 2018!
Best Regards,
Stephanie VILLEMAGNE

A Brand New Career Management Center

We are delighted to announce that CUHK Business School has now a new walk-in Career Management office dedicated to the MBA students and soon enough to the Masters students.
Thanks to Prof. Kalok Chan (Dean of CUHK Business School) and the Faculty Office, the Career Management Center is now offering access to 4 interview rooms with video conferencing system enabling students to have interviews on campus or remotely, 2 semi-private booths where students can sit and work on their CV, cover letter and applications, as well as a career library that we intend to strengthen over time.
Located on the 4th floor, the walk-in office opens from 9:00am to 6:00pm and students who have a career-related enquiry are welcome to come and meet with the team.

MBA Study Trips 2017

In this November and December, our MBA students traveled to 4 different countries for business field study trips. Each of location had a different business theme, including Impact of Foreign Investments for Local Community Development, Strategic Brand Management, Silicon Valley Entrepreneurial Ecosystem and Social Entrepreneurship Development.
Let’s take a look at our trip photos and highlights!

Africa (Impact of Foreign Investments for Local Community Development)

A group of students went to Africa for business field study from Nov 26 to Dec 2, 2017. By understanding how the ecosystem works and how local entrepreneurs elaborate on improvement of rural economy through face-to-face interactions, students had a valuable learning experience in an emerging market.

Thailand (Strategic Brand Management)

Another group visited Thailand for 7-day study trip and explored the international strategic brand management in emerging economies. They had a chance to gain practical brand development skills during speaker sessions and company visits in various industries like healthcare, pharmacy, sports business and so on.

USA (Silicon Valley Entrepreneurial Ecosystem)

The US trip focused on innovation and entrepreneurship in the Silicon Valley Ecosystem. Students learnt directly from successful executives and entrepreneurs in the Silicon Valley through face-to-face interactions. Besides, students also spent some time to study the entrepreneurship development of the Valley and San Francisco. They visited some companies and attended lectures delivered by entrepreneurs and professors who shared their experiences/perspectives.

Taiwan (Social Entrepreneurship Development)

A group of MBA students traveled to Taiwan for a 6-day business field trip in November to investigate Social Entrepreneurship and Cultural Business Development in Taiwan. During this amazing trip, our students visited a number of companies, organizations and attended lectures by distinguished professors from Taiwan.

Distinguished Speaker Event: Seminar on “Why Does Corporate Governance Matter to You?”

We were honored to have Dr. Raymond Reed Baker to be our guest speaker of our Distinguished Speaker Event on November 7 in Town Centre with the topic “Why Does Corporate Governance Matter to You?”. Dr. Baker is the Managing Director of One World International Group. During the talk, there was a discussion to identify key variables related to driving more effective corporate governance. Through this identification, we observed how corporate governance is a critical invisible hand that affects each of us daily.

Distinguished Speaker Event: Panel Discussion on “Startup Ecosystem and Early Funding in Hong Kong”

We were honored to have Ms. Karena Belin (Co-Founder of W Hub), Mr. Florian Gamper (Founder of Datacrag) and Mr. Gerardo Salandra (CEO and Founder of Rocketbots) to be our panel members and Professor Wilton Chau (Professor of Practice in Entrepreneurship, MBA Programs, CUHK Business School) to be our moderator of our Distinguished Speaker Event on December 7 in Town Centre with the topic "Startup Ecosystem and Early Funding in Hong Kong". The talk presented the state of the HK ecosystem, Hong Kong Science Park incubation and the main Government funding scheme, the Artificial Intelligence development in Hong Kong and Asia and other related topics. Students found this sharing inspiring and insightful and are looking forward to the upcoming Distinguished Speaker Events.
