Hong Kong has always been one of the world’s major financial hubs with a mix of Asian cultures and connection to the Western market. It has therefore naturally become Yi-Ting’s top choice to do her MBA in Hong Kong because she knew this is the place where she wanted to start her career and she can leverage on her Chinese background whilst maintaining a good bridge to the western world.   The extensive alumni network, its history and reputation were all the other pull factors.

Atsushi Sugiyama is a rare gem.  He started off as a general staff at the automotive business division of Mitsubishi Corporation in Japan.  An opportunity arose where he was seconded to Thailand to be in charge of the local marketing and supply chain team, where he also completed a Thai language course.  For Atsushi, despite being able to learn and experience a lot as well as getting a good understanding of Thailand, it was a tough experience for him.  He was increasingly frustrated by the hierarchy and bureaucracy of large corporations.

China Business Knowledge @ CUHK Luncheon Series: Risk Management of Invisible Risks

At our next China Business Knowledge @ CUHK Luncheon Series on 9 May, Prof. Michael Zhang, Associate Dean (Innovation and Impact) and Associate Director of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Finance Research Centre, will share his research on managing risks. In social and economic settings, we often do not know the distribution of events. Even if we know the historical distribution of market returns, there is no way to be sure that the distribution of future returns will remain the same. Prof. Zhang will reveal that uncertainty can be decomposed into pure risk (outcome uncertainty), pure ambiguity (distribution uncertainty), and their interactions. With decades of experiences in risk assessment, alumnus Mr. Patrick Ip will share his insights on the practical measures we can take to minimise potential risks, with real-life examples of past black swan events.

Date:    9 May 2019 (Thursday)
Time:   12:00 noon – 1:45pm (12:00 noon – 12:30pm registration and networking. (
