MBA Coffee Chat Series with Mr TK Chiang

The CUHK MBA community recently had the privilege of hosting Mr TK Chiang (MBA 1998), CEO of CLP and our Elite Mentor, for an inspiring session of our Coffee Chat series. With 36 years at CLP, starting as an engineer, Mr Chiang shared invaluable lessons on leadership, career growth and sustainable business strategy, offering our students a rare glimpse into the mindset of a top executive.

Key Insights from the Session:

  • Career Growth – The importance of deep functional expertise balanced with a helicopter view of operations. Early career moves between companies can be beneficial, but long-term stability often drives upward mobility.
  • Leadership & Culture – CLP’s family-like culture thrives on open communication, respectful debate and purpose-driven decisions. He highlighted the role of mentorship in gaining board exposure and aligning with organisational goals.
  • ESG & DEI – Sustainability is core to CLP’s strategy, requiring community engagement and multi-stakeholder collaboration.
  • Decision-Making – A structured approach of gathering comprehensive data, assessing timing and weighing consequences before acting.
  • Talent Development – CLP invests in long-term employee growth, from graduate trainee programs to leadership development, with performance reviews focusing on potential, adaptability, and strategic thinking.

LEAP programme is a comprehensive learning journey beyond campus and beyond graduation, fostering engagement with our BEAM stakeholders. “Coffee Chat Series”, one of LEAP’s serial initiatives, brings together MBA students and alumni to have dialogues about personal and career development with the esteemed leaders.
