Turning Own Passion into an Entrepreneurial Career
Rongxin He
(Full-time, Class of 2017)
Pre MBA: Corporate Strategy Manager, First Investment Group
Post MBA: Co-Founder, TOUCHEU
Rongxin’s story deserves a special mention. It’s not just because she established her own business with other MBA course mates at a young age. More importantly, the socially responsible startup says “No” to environmental damage and challenges the fashion industry, which has long been one of the most polluting in the world.
Currently CEO and Co-Founder of TOUCHEU, Asia’s first online marketplace specialising in eco-friendly handmade fashion and lifestyle products, Rongxin turned her passion for craftsmanship and sustainable living into a business that aims to make an impact.
Her entrepreneurial road, however, has not been straightforward.
Having spent over 2 years assisting the Chairman of a Hainan-based investment group in China, Rongxin strongly realised the need for improving herself with new knowledge and skills in response to the ever-changing business world. As a young lady who wished to start her own business, she soon concluded that an MBA was the most practical and relevant academic qualification for fulfilling her dream. But why CUHK? “Its strong curriculum in finance and entrepreneurship, extensive alumni base and well-structured mentorship programme were all critical factors.” The fact that Hong Kong has long been the gateway between East and West, both geographically and culturally, is an added advantage. “I think Hong Kong, being Asia’s financial hub, is one of the best places to study finance,” she said.
Rongxin gained further international exposure when she continued her studies for her dual degree at HEC Paris, the most respected higher business education institute in France. Here, she became aware of the harsh reality that many quality but small-scale designer brands have constantly been undervalued and overshadowed by fast-fashion giants that are causing much harm to our environment. Meanwhile, she saw the emergence of a niche market in China. “They’ve a firm belief that fashion should be seen as a personal statement. I can’t agree more. Fashion should carry a deeper meaning!”
She praises CUHK MBA for equipping her with the right finance, marketing and entrepreneurship tools to tackle business challenges, and is particularly impressed by its commitment to social responsibility. “CUHK cares about our future. It’s time for action. In the 21st century, sustainability lies at the heart of business success. On top of making profits, a company can create value for the world we live in.” She is also grateful that as a CUHK alumna, she has gained much trust and respect from her business partners.
Rongxin has no hesitation in recommending the Programme to anyone who contemplates doing an MBA. “The course creates value for my career development. It has broadened my horizons, empowering me to see the many opportunities that are open to a socially responsible business venture.”
