The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) hosted its Hong Kong Annual Dinner on 19 May in the ballroom of the Island Shangri-La Hong Kong, welcoming over 200 members, clients and friends to this significant annual event. Representatives of the Business School invited were Prof. Gu Zhaoyang, Director of the School of Accountancy; Prof. Kevin Lam, Director of both the Master of Accountancy Program (part-time) and the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Accountancy; and Ms. Florence Lai, Director of the Alumni and Corporate Affairs Office.
Guests first gathered to mingle over cocktails, before moving on to a Chinese-style dinner in the elegant ballroom. In a packed program, the dinner kicked off with welcome speeches delivered by Dr. Aidan Goddard, Chairman of the CIMA Hong Kong, and Mr. Keith Luck, President of the CIMA, respectively. Proceedings sparkled with a warm toast led by CIMA Hong Kong Committee members onstage, who thanked each guest present for the tremendous support they have given to the CIMA’s development.
The highlight of the program came with an award presentation to announce the best examination winners for the year. We are proud to reveal that two Business School alumni, Mr. Simon Yuen Siu Man and Mr. Eric Poon Yiu Kei, were named the best performers for 2014. Simon was presented with the ‘CIMA Best Paper Award’ for his ‘E3 Enterprise Strategy’ paper in the May session, and Eric received the ‘CIMA Hong Kong Past President Award’ for his ‘T4 Part B Case Study Examination’ paper in the November session.
Having graduated from the part-time MBA Class in 2012, Simon is now an assistant manager at River Trade Terminal. “I am grateful to have had the opportunity to study in the Business School, where my interests in accounting and finance were inspired,” he said. “The intensive curriculum provided me with a solid foundation to advance for the professional qualification as a CIMA Chartered Management Accountant.” Stressing that his award meant a lot to him, Eric is a part-time MBA alumnus of 2013 now working at Mansfield Manufacturing Co. Ltd. as an operations manager. “It was really a challenge to balance my family, career and study commitments. Reflecting on my MBA studies, I should thank Prof. Kevin Lam, in particular, for nurturing the professional accounting knowledge that prepared me well for the examination. The sharpening of my soft skills on the MBA course also makes me a more confident person to tackle the challenges I encounter every day.”
Prof. Kalok Chan, Dean of the CUHK Business School, remarked, “I am pleased with the outstanding performance of our MBA graduates in the CIMA examinations. This truly underlines the excellent quality of our teaching and curriculum, which prepares our students to face an ever-changing business landscape. My hearty congratulations to our deserving award-winners!”
