I am a finance professional with pre-MBA work experience of seven years. With the typical criteria for choosing a school, I also wanted a focus on entrepreneurship in an Asian environment, a high return on investment and a lower financial burden.
Initially, I focused on top Indian schools, but a saner mind suggested I check global options. Hong Kong and Singapore seemed a good alternative given that they provided a global perspective in an Asian setting.
Hong Kong is the destination if you are keen to have a strong China exposure with a global outlook. So, I enrolled on the MBA at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School. The CUHK MBA, being the oldest programme in the region with close ties with China, some high-profile faculty members and alumni from China and local industry links was my first choice. Of course, other considerations such as exchange partnerships, reasonable costs with scholarships and Hong Kong’s IANG (Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates) visa support, etc, sealed my decision.
It was my first international academic and cultural experience. I studied and interacted with classmates and professors from more than 25 countries. Local knowledge on China shared by experienced classmates was topped up with global insights from my fellow international students. Career guidance from mentors, opportunities to participate in global MBA competitions, an exchange programme at the London Business School and above all, an opportunity to meet Warren Buffett at Berkshire headquarters in Omaha, enriched it further.
I started by exploring a local MBA and it was a good global journey ultimately.
